Within the varieties of plainchant, melody was useful for textual illumination; the configurations of sound took their cue from the phrases. St. Augustine (354–430 ce), who was captivated by music and valued its utility to faith, was frightened of its sensuous element and anxious the melody in no way take precedence more than the text. These had
